Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers

It is a natural human desire to look young and healthy. Recently, there has been a rise in awareness of various minimally invasive and non-invasive skin treatments for rejuvenating ageing skin.

As you age, the facial tissues lose volume and start thinning out giving a wrinkly look and hollowed cheeks. Derma fillers, also called soft tissue fillers, reduce wrinkles, fill up the scars and restore the facial contours giving a youthful look to your skin.

They are easily available and offer immediate results at a comparatively low cost.

Derma filler usage

Derma fillers are widely used for

  1. Facial contouring: Wrinkles, folds, crow’s feet, smile lines, etc.
  2. Lip enhancement
  3. Facial deformities
  4. Scarring
  5. Breast enhancement
  6. Buttock augmentation
  7. Sunken eyes and cheeks
  8. Earlobe plumping
  9. Neck rejuvenation

Procedure details
  • Cleansing: Area to be injected with the filler is cleaned with an antiseptic
  • Anesthesia (if needed): Speak to your doctor who will advise you on the situations where it is needed
  • Injection: Derma filler is injected using different techniques such as layering, tunneling, serial puncture, and cross-hatching depending on the type of target treatment.

Post-Procedure care
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures cold/hot
  • Avoid massaging treated areas for 6 hours
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for 6 hours
  • Sleep with the head elevated for at least one night
  • Pain medication can be taken on an SOS basis
  • Resume skincare products such as retinoids, only after 24 hours have passed since the treatment

Side effects

Derma fillers are absolutely safe when conducted under proper supervision by a qualified Dermatologist However, there might be certain minor side effects like,

  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Itching
  • Rash

Longevity of the treatment

The longevity of the derma filler treatment depends on the type of product used, the target area of treatment, and the physiology of the patient. In simple words, longevity depends on two factors: product density and depth of injection. Higher density and deeper injection give longer-lasting results. The most common derma filler, i.e. hyaluronic acid filler, tends to last anywhere between 6-12 months. Repeat treatments are required.

Is Derma filler the same as Botox?

The answer is a big NO. They differ in the way they work.

Botox is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes the underlying muscles to stop wrinkling, whereas Derma filler is a gel-like product that increases the volume of soft facial tissue.

The efficacy of Botox or Derma filler totally depends on what kind of treatment you are looking for. Speak to a qualified medical professional to understand your needs and then make an informed decision.
